  1. Presentation of the Lesson

Now, I have here a Fish bone diagram. Let us try to fill in this diagram.

Again based on the video, what are the causes of improper waste disposal?

Very good! How about the effects of improper waste disposal?

Very good, class! You completed the diagram correctly.

Class this diagram has something to do with our lesson for today. So now, what do you think is our lesson all about?

Very good!

In this lesson you are expected to attain the following objectives:

  1. determine the cause and effect used in the sentence and;
  2. write the cause and effect of a particular situation with the use of signal words.

  1. Lesson Proper

Class, based on your answers a few minutes ago, what is now a cause?

Correct! How about the effect? How can we define now an effect based on your answers earlier?

Correct! And remember class that cause and effect always show relationship. Is that clear?

Now let us have some examples of sentences that show cause and effect.

  1. There is a flash flood in the city because there are no trees in the mountains.
  2. People keep on throwing garbage on the river so fishes are dying.
  3. The air is no longer fresh due to the smoke coming from the vehicles.
  4. Trees are dying therefore, birds have no place to live in.

In sentence number one, what is the cause and the effect? Will you please come here on the board and underline the cause once and underline the effect twice.

Correct! What word is used to connect the two? Will you please encircle it?

Alright, based on the sentence, “because” signifies what?

Good! Let’s proceed, how about the cause and effect in sentence number two?

Nice! What is the word that connects the two? Will you please encircle it?

What does “so” express?

That’s right! Now, look for the cause and effect in sentence number three then underline it here on the board.

Good job! Now, encircle the word that is used to connect the two.

Alright, what does “due to” shows?

Correct! Lastly, what is the cause and effect in the last sentence?

Now, encircle the word that is used to connect the two.

Good! “Therefore” shows what?

Very good!

Now as you notice on the sentences, there are signal words that connect the cause and the effect. What are those signal words? Will you please enumerate?

Correct! Those are just some of the examples of connecting words or signal words that you can use to help you identify the cause and effect.

Aside from those given signal words, here are the list of the common signal words that you can use. Will you please read class?

So class, you can now easily identify the cause and effect in the sentence because of these signal words. The sentence after the signal words because, due to, since, as, for are automatically the cause, and the sentence after the signal words as a result, therefore, so, consequently are the effect.

Am I understood, class?

Now, going back to our fishbone diagram, let us now try to connect the cause and effect using the signal words that we discussed.
