Traffic jams- in this modern world it is as common as traffic pollution or deforestation or people surviving in concrete jungles. People earn more, can afford automobiles, more often than not more than one, and choose to bring them all out on road at once. Unfortunately, only money can be earned, time still is extremely limited. We are in always busy and always in a hurry...more so at traffic lights. That can be very well understood in the long, serpentine rows of automobiles stuck in the roads, drivers honking and cursing, often with their engines running, raving up pollution levels of air, noise, etc to levels unimaginable. Traffic jams can last few minutes, hours or even days. A recent traffic jam in Indonesia lasting for 3 days proved to be fatal for 12 people stuck in it. Aren't there some ways to curb it? Shouldn't something be done to keep traffic jams under control? I have an idea, to curb this huge problem. My idea can be practically implemented to reduce traffic jams due to inefficient distribution of red/green lights at traffic signals. I present before you "intelligent traffic lights". It is about traffic lights being intelligent. Lots of times especially during different times of the day, traffic from all sides of a, say, a square are not same. One side is occasionally lot more than the other. Traffic lights with the same period of time of green at all sides may cause traffic to be held up at one side while the other side remains empty due to less no. of vehicles that side. Suppose traffic lights can sense the side with heavier traffic and can lights can stay green for more period of time that side than the rest, it would save a lot of time for daily commuters especially at office time. This idea is easily implementable with a one-time investment by inserting copper coils under the roads near signal. Moving vehicles with metal bodies causes a change in the magnetic field in the coils which generates an electro motive force. Now more no. of vehicles cause more change in magnetic field and therefore more generation of electromotive force which a microcontroller senses and is coded so as to accordingly decide the time duration of each signal. Since this is a onetime investment, and this being a non-profit developmental idea, if government approves of it, there would be a direct investment from government and there won’t be a need for a Fundraiser and hence no Disbursements. Now for the officer compensation, this factor
