How to Wire a 3 Way Outlet

In peoples homes they need light to see at night. For that reason we hire electricians to wire lights in our living rooms, basements, kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Sometimes you want two switches on separate sides of the room to turn on one single light. For this you need a 3 way switch. In this essay i will describe in detail how to install a 3 way switch.

When you begin you will need some essential tools. You will need a hammer, wire stripers, lineman's pliers, and a screw driver. You will also need some essential materials such as 14/2 romex wire, 14/3 romex wire, wire nuts, rectangular boxes, two three way switches, a light, a porcelain keyless light fixture, and faceplate covers.

You must now mount your switch boxes and your light box. Your two 3 way switch boxes have to be at forty-eight inches high off the ground. Your lighting box has to be wherever you want it to be.

You now have to run your 14/2 and 14/3 wire to your boxes. You need to run 14/2 wire from the breaker to the first 3 way switch. You now need to run your 14/3 wire to your light. Then you now run your 14/3 wire to your other 3 way switch.

The wire going from you first 3 way switch need to be connected to the switch. The copper wires are ponytailed together and connected to the ground screw. The white wires must be wire nutted together. The black wire from the breaker connects to the top screw and the red wire connecting to the other switch to the bottom screw doesn't matter which one, and the black connected to the other bottom screw. You now take your 14/3 from the switch and you 14/3 from your other swtich to the light box. You wire nut your black wire from your already wired switch to your white wire from you un wired switch. Then you wire both red wires together and nut them. now you wire nut your grounds together and pig tail them to the ground screw. The black and white wire go to the light the black goes onto the gold screw and the white wire to the silver screw.
