More to Nursing Than Just Care and Healing

In the article concepts and beliefs of Nursing (Sims, 2018), Sims argues that people have different views on what nursing is. Sims says that the definition people give to nursing is characterized by their opinions and beliefs. The author creates awareness that nursing goes beyond the patient-nurse relationship. Nursing Metaparadigm includes nursing, person, environment, and health.

        The Nurse is the helper and healer to the patient. The role played by the nurse is both physical and psychological. The physical part involves assessment, medicine administration and providing information about new and alternative medication (Fawcett, 1984). Psychological help is also important to the patient wellbeing. Giving hope by talking to the patient, encouraging the patient makes the patient feel better (Alligood, 2014). The nurse offers support to the patient for quick recovery.

         A nurse needs to handle a patient as a whole putting into consideration the surrounding factors. Concerns about the person culture, belief and knowledge are important in nursing care. The setting under which the patient and nurse interact is part of nursing (Chinn & Kramer, 2015). The environment is influenced by factors such as culture, belief or place of working (Sims, 2018). It may be a home, school or community social area setup. A nurse will change the nursing tactics depending on the environmental needs.

        Health is the final piece of the nursing concept. It involves more than just disease. Interaction of patient with the environment is part of health. The person ailing need to be looked at as a whole putting the surrounding factors into consideration (Kao, Reeder, Hsu, & Cheng, 2006). The health of a patient is paramount, and disease causative agents should be eliminated.

All the four factors are important in nursing care. The nurse provides excellent care to patients. The environment in which the nursing care happens affects the methods of nursing used. The health of an individual involves the whole person as well as the surrounding.
