  1. Select one teaching of Jesus from one of the following Bible verses (underline the passage chosen): Matthew 5:21-24; Matthew 5:43-48; Matthew 6:19-24; Matthew 7:15-23; Luke 15:1-32; John 13:1-17, 34-35; John 15:1-11. Answer the following questions:
  1. What was Jesus’ point in the teaching?

The point of this teaching is to teach us the bigger perspective in life. “Matt 6:19-34 divides into two major sections: vv 19-24 (on wealth) and 25-34 (on worry).” (Blomberg, C. L. ,1992).

(We should not be only concerned with wealth just because of what it is able to do for us. The treasures that we do have whatever it may be (Money, experiences, or possessions) may not be what we seem them to be. All of the treasures that we do have eventually wear out. The money that we have could get stolen or lose its value. Possessions wear out or get stolen and experiences eventually fade. We will lose everything that we have eventually on the Earth. In this passage, Jesus points out that the treasure in heaven. The treasure in heaven cannot be wore down, or stolen. It is not like the treasure on Earth. Once you have these treasures in Heaven, you have them forever. Nothing can happen to them. While being in Heaven, the treasures are not materials. The treasures that we do have are relationships. When we get to Heaven, we are with God and we are beside him living with his goodness, and love. Another benefit to these treasures is that we have great relationships with each other as well. The main point of this passage is not to become poor but to not have being wealthy as our main goal in life. Someone that is more materialist would rather work long hours, especially on the weekends and would choose to go to work rather than going to Church or praying.

  1. What sort of relevance does this teaching have for other worldviews?

This teaching has relevance to Atheism because Atheists are more in touch with the Earth compared to the bible. This is like Atheists believing in Science and evolution. It is important to understand to not only focus on the materialist things such as cars and money. Atheists are more involved with the materialist world compared to the spiritual world. Because Atheists do not believe in the spiritual world, we are only concerned with the materialistic world, which would technically make us “materialist”. Although, this does not make Atheists greedy, it is because we are only limited to materials on the Earth. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19-24). This is important when explaining Atheism because we believe that we should be able to use all of the treasures that we do have now, while we have the time because we do not believe that we will have more valuable treasures in Heaven because we are not spiritual.

  1. What does this teaching reveal about Jesus?

This teaching reveals a lot about Jesus. This shows us that Jesus believed in being connected with himself and having strong relationships with the ones around him. Jesus did not care as much about the materials he did have, as he knew that the materials that were important would never go away, such as the relationships that he has with the others in Heaven. It teaches us a lot because it also show that he cares a lot about his people as he wants them to be connected with each other as well as have a strong belief in him.
