Macbeth's Character Transformation

Macbeth, the main character in the tragedy of Macbeth, undergoes a series of character changes throughout the play. His transformation occurs in three major stages. First comes his attitude at the beginning of Macbeth where it is very positive and powerful. Subsequently he endures a change with the murder of king Duncan that reduces him from his moral and good status. Finally, he becomes wicked in his ways and develops into a tyrant and a butcher. This series of changes are evident as one reads the tragic play of Macbeth.

Initially, Macbeth is a confident man battle-hardened and fearless. He cuts an enemy "from naval to jaw" in battle and seeks to gain glory and power. The captain says, "fear brave Macbeth," and well he deserved that name. Macbeth is a great warrior and never would consider a murderous act before Lady Macbeth's interference. The witches' prophesies do not seem feasible to him at first so he does not act upon them. Lady Macbeth is a wicked woman who does much to affect Macbeth's overall character.

Macbeth's character changes dramatically when he commits the murder of king Duncan. He is immediately changed to attempting to cover up his action and placing the blame on someone else. He is upset and worried about what he has done and feels very guilty about it. Macbeth is unable to say "Amen" because of his guilty conscience. His seeing the ghost of Banquo and losing his composure at his feast with his guests also prove his guilty mind.

Towards the end of the play, Macbeth becomes ruthless and completely dependent upon the prophesies of the witches. He feels invincible while he is under their influence. People begin to speculate about what really happened concerning the murders. Macbeth becomes a merciless tyrant who will kill anybody who gets in the way of what he wants. He is consumed by the desire to fulfill the witches' prophesies and ironically follows them to his death.

Macbeth in the tragic play of Macbeth experiences some very distinct personality changes. He is first a very good man but is changed by prophecies and Lady Macbeth's persuasiveness to an evil controlling tyrant. The main focal point of this change is Macbeth's agreement to murder Duncan.
