The Lion King

There are many themes in "The Lion King" that are related to faith and life. One of these themes is how we are all "connected" in the circle of life. Mufasa explained to Simba how the circle connects all life; the lion eats the antelope, however when the lion dies, its body becomes grass that is consumed by the antelope. This shows that death is not the final answer. Another theme in The Lion King is the ultimate sacrifice. In the movie Mufasa gives his life so that Simba might live. This is connected to faith because it resembles the Paschal Mystery. The film is also connected to faith through the way Mufasa lived through Simba. This is connected to faith because God lives in us. Mufasa tells Simba to "Remember who you are...," this is similar to the vocation each of us is individually called to do. Another way that The Lion King is connected to faith is through baptism; Simba and his child are both baptized by Rafiki as babies, similar to how many of us are baptized as babies when entering our religion. Confirmation in religion is when we are "coming of age" and take on more responsibility, this is similar to when Simba goes away and returns; he had come of age and was ready to take on the responsibility of king. A line from the film, spoken by Mufasa to Simba, "You are my son..." is similar to a passage from the Bible, spoken by God to Jesus, "This is my son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased." The final way that the film is similar to religion is the call to be in community. To better understand God, we need to be in community, just like Simba needed to return to his community for clarification about his father's death.

As Mufasa helped Simba see who he really was, my mom helps me to see who I really am. Whenever I am going through a hard time, my mom reminds me who I am and to act in a way that I would want to reflect me as a person. My mom has also been a major influence on my spiritual life. My mom always encourages me to pray first whenever I have problems and to turn to God. My mom also explains certain passages from the bible to me and lets me think instead of trying to tell me what to think about religion.

My relationship with God affects the way I feel about myself. I don't have to feel bad about myself because Jesus loves me and gave his life for me. God made me in his image and I don't have
