Bariers of Communication

Communication is the changing of a message from sender to a receiver in an understanding manner. The importance of communication is important in criminal justice field. Communication is an absolute must in the criminal justice field and accounts for understanding the victim and the suspect. Effective communication leads to understanding. The communication process has four basic catorgies, or types of obstacles to effective communication are emotional barrier, physical barrier, semantic barrier, and ineffective listening.

The process begins with the sender and ends with the receiver. People base their transmitting of information on their personal experience and expectations. A student who expects to be laughed at when making a suggestion will not say what he /she wanted to say. Preserving self-esteem is normal to some people. Because in law enforcement the fear of negative response reprisal will prevent someone from speaking out. It's important that everyone have an opportunity to make their own suggestions with a group decision. And people with low-self-esteem use certain patterns and disclaimers when attempting to communication. Police officer with low-esteem may not be forth coming with opinions about who committed a crime. Emotional barrier that cause communication to break down range from simple depression.

Physical barrier are the aspects of an environment that makes communication more difficult. Any obstruction that slows or impedes the free flow of information is a physical barrier to communication. Rigid chain of command that requires police officer to report to the supervisor instead of the peer about information in regards to a crime or case. Physical barrier are present in the area surround by the sender and the receiver. For example it there is a lot of noise the receiver may not hear what the sender is saying and won't be able to get the message.

Semantic barrier occurs when there is a disagreement about words used, often based on individuals being unable to communicate clearly. Disallowing the parties involved to come to a common meaning of the word used. Semantic barrier are usually either denotative or connotative, meaning denotative that the sender and the receiver about the straight meaning of a word without knowing it. And connotative barrier how a word is meant in a particular context. For example the word bimonthly might means twice per month while other people hearing it means every
