Advice to My Future Whole Self

Laci Hill

Wellbeing Area#1: Career Wellbeing

Provide what you consider to be the best two pieces of advice for your future self regarding career wellbeing. Support your two pieces of advice with evidence from two different sources of information (other sources than already have been provided in class). Each source must score a 40 or more using the CRAAP test. Below state the advice to your future self from each source, write a short summary of the key points from your source, cite the source in proper APA citation style, and provide the CRAAP score.

1st Piece of Advice: Keep a positive attitude and have positive energy throughout the workplace, even when it seems impossible to do so.

Summary of Key Points: A health and social issues reporter for St. Cloud Times wrote a newspaper article regarding positivity in the workplace. The author assesses the importance of the type of energy we bring to our job, and how it can affect us in either a beneficial or fruitless way, depending on our behavior and actions. Whether we enjoy our job is up to us, and if we don’t, it is up to us to change that, or leave. We are not a buoy, we are not obligated to stay in one spot our entire life. I chose this source, because it answered my piece of advice in a rather explicit way, and it adds on even more to my piece of advice. The fact that the author is a reporter for a popular newspaper and its currency is one of the many reasons why I chose this source.

2nd Piece of Advice: When you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed at work, do not panic, just relax.

Summary of Key Points: This article talks about the negative effects of stress at work, and some ways to help with it. Work stress can cause several different types of chronic health problems, including cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorder. Stress can also bring on a variety of psychological and physiological disorders. Managing our stress in the workplace could mean possible meditation. Meditation can be a helpful part in stress management. The article also mentions that employers could provide seminars and workshops to deal with their employees’ stress. I chose this article, because stress management is a vital part in being happy and healthy in one’s career. The article has some facts backing it up and it was recently published.

Wellbeing Area#2: Social Wellbeing

Provide what you consider to be the best two pieces of advice for your future self regarding social wellbeing.

1st Piece of Advice: Even if it seems impossible, find a work-life balance.

Summary of Key Points: This article talked about how work-life balance is key to social happiness. Finding a balance between our work life and social life can be hard at times, sometimes it feels impossible; however, it can be done. Technology makes it even more tough to separate the two, following us everywhere we go. The author also touches on some things we can do to boost our social wellbeing, like using our time at work efficiently, using our days off, and disconnecting while we aren’t at work. Although we may want to take home some work over the weekend to get a head start, it is a trap. Do not do it. I chose this article, because it talked a lot about how we can achieve a work-life balance, and gave some tips along the way. I chose this article, because of the currency, and also the sources the author used to get some of her information, like NY Times and The Hartford.

2nd Piece of Advice: Take time away from your electronics.

Summary of Key Points: This article was about how digital addiction is increasing faster than ever. It has gotten to the point where people will take their phone with them to the bathroom, to get a drink, to study sessions, everywhere! The author also mentions that our digital devices are like a slot machine, because every time they go off, we think, “what did I get?”. I chose this article, because it showed me how addicted people, especially teenagers and young adults are to their phones, and it made me realize how unhealthy it is. This article had studies to prove their topic, and also the article was very current.
