Commercial Review Essay

In the Doritos commercial they don’t push the advertisement heavily as they have in other commercials. The commercial consists of them having some product placement which is not that heavy. The Doritos is merely giving an effect on people when they hear the crunching. It allows them to be drawn in to the person eating them. In the commercial there is a sexual appeal but there is also humor. It is up to the audience if they want to look at the humor side or the sexual side of the commercial. Some strategic appeals they us in the commercial are humor, sexual appeal, and product placement.

In the Doritos commercial a man is eating chips on a park bench and he has crumbs all over his face. A woman runs by while listening to music, she hears the crunch of the Doritos and stops to look at the man on the park bench with a bag of Doritos. She notices the crumbs on his face and runs up to him to lick the crumbs off his face because there were no more chips in the bag, after he gets an idea. The next day he has another bag of Doritos and sees the same woman run by. Once again, she hears the crunch of the Doritos and stops to look at him, he removes the bag of chips off his lap and there are crumbs all over his pants. The woman just smirks and looks at the crumbs, after the Doritos logo is shown, a man appears behind the woman and as she is about to go lick the crumbs off his pants, the man pushes her out of the way to lick them off himself.

Humor is commonly known to be in commercials, in this case, Doritos uses it to get the audience to laugh to feel joyful when they think about Doritos. When humor is used in commercials it is typically used for the audience watching to be in a better mood and laugh because they are more prone to being receptive to the persuasive message (Scharrer, E., Bergstrom, A., Paradise, A., & Ren, Q., 2006). In the Doritos commercial, after the man eating the Doritos places the crumbs in his lap realizes the woman will lick them off his lap, a man appears behind her and pushes her out of the way for the Dorito crumbs. It makes the audience watching laugh because it is a dirty innuendo that adults will get and kids may just laugh because it seems funny. Doritos using humor to draw the audience to by their brand for having a positive affect through their commercial message.

Sexual appeal and advertising have been advertised together for years to get the consumer to buy the product, and the Doritos commercial shows that. The Doritos commercial has used a sexual appeal to draw in the audience, men tend to be more encouraged to watch the commercial more than women if there is some sort of sexual appeal, more so if there is nudity (Reichert, T., LaTour, M. S., & Ford, J. B., 2017). Doritos shows this in their commercial showing a man eating Doritos and he gets crumbs all over his face. After a woman jogging, stops and licks the crumbs off his face. The guy gets an idea and spills the crumbs on his pants. This shows the commercial is usual sexual appeal to get people interested in the commercial.
